Meet Joel Seach — Steelers Director of Coaching & Former NBL1 Player

Meet Our Director of Coaching, Joel Seach

We hope all our Steelers families, players, coaches and supporters had a great summer break and enjoyed being back on court for the first round of 2026 last weekend. It’s been fantastic to see the courts buzzing again

As we settle back into the season, we’re excited to re-ignite our Getting to Know the Committee series and share more of the people who give their time, energy and care to our club. There’s lots more coming your way — so stay tuned for regular posts and updates as the season unfolds.

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Joel Seach, our Director of Coaching, and one of the many people who quietly does an enormous amount behind the scenes for the Steelers.

Joel and his family joined the club around 2021/22 when his kids Harper and Elijah started playing — first in the Under 8s — and they’ve been part of the Steelers community ever since. Local to the area (with kids at POPS), Joel loved the close-knit feel of the club and, like many in our community, stepped up to volunteer his time and skills to help the club continue to grow.

Basketball has been part of Joel’s life since he was five years old. He played his junior basketball with the Ringwood Hawks and Spirit Magic, before going on to play at a high level in what is now NBL1 with Ringwood and Eltham, spending time with the Melbourne Tigers squad, and having stints playing overseas in China. He’s also represented Australia as part of the Australian Schoolboys team — a huge achievement. Today, Joel continues to coach representative teams and still enjoys a run around (when not injured!) with some seriously talented players.

Despite all that experience, Joel is incredibly modest — and his real passion now is coaching. He gets the biggest thrill from seeing kids improve, gain confidence, and apply a skill they’ve been working on in a game. As Director of Coaching, Joel’s focus this season is on supporting coaches at all levels, sharing training ideas, and helping players build strong fundamentals early so they can enjoy the game and keep developing.

One area Joel is especially passionate about is the Mini Steelers program. While this is very much a team effort led by key members across the club, Joel strongly believes Mini Steelers is a critical pathway for the future of the Steelers — introducing kids to basketball in a fun, supportive way and helping grow participation across the club. Building this pathway is vital to ensuring more kids discover the game, join the club, and continue playing for years to come.

A few fun facts about Joel:

  • Owns at least 30 pairs of basketball shoes (size 14/15 — they take up a LOT of room)

  • Game-day fuel: a piccolo if playing, cappuccino if coaching

  • Off court: walking his Aussie Shepherd, gym sessions or hitting the pool

Joel says what he loves most about the Steelers is the community:

“It’s a small club with a big community feel. No one feels like a stranger, and everyone pulls together to help the next generation enjoy the game.”

And his advice for young players starting out?

Get the fundamentals right, practice because you love it, and always give your best. If you try your hardest, you can walk off the court proud — win, lose or draw.

We’re incredibly lucky to have Joel guiding our players, supporting our coaches, and helping shape the future of the Steelers. Thanks for everything you bring to our club and community
